Rachmaninoff's Epic Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
One of the most innovative works ever composed for solo piano and symphony orchestra, Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a structural miracle of 24 variations that flow together with remarkable fluidity. Hear the piece performed in its entirety under the magic fingers of concert pianist Andrew von Oeyen during this Pasadena Symphony show at the Ambassador Auditorium. The concert also includes Alexander Miller's vibrant, colorful, and intentionally puzzling Scherzo Crypto, and Edward Elgar's brilliant and much-debated Enigma Variations, a mysterious work full of clever personal allusions and a yet-unsolved riddle regarding its principal theme.
