The Philadelphia Orchestra: Prokofiev & Ravel
If you can't actually spend springtime in Paris, The Philadelphia Orchestra may just have the next best thing, as a collection of fine European artists performs pieces by Ravel, Strauss, Prokofiev and the Philly premiere of a work by Guillaume Connesson, one of France's most honored composers. Connesson's friend and colleague Stéphane Denève conducts his Flammenschrift (Flaming Letters), a tribute to German music, then Russian-Belgian violinist Vadim Repin takes on Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1. You'll also experience the stirring Death and Transfiguration by Richard Strauss and Ravel's whirling La Valse, described by the French composer as "dancing on the edge of a volcano," in this concert at the Kimmel Center.
