Arden Theatre presents Anton Chekhov's humorous and affecting tale about longing for a better life, with a new translation by Curt Columbus. The once privileged Prozorov family feels constrained by the smallness of life in their tiny provincial Russian town, previously a bustling army outpost where their late father served as general. Attempts to improve their crumbling social status lay bare the larger forces of unrest that will soon engulf the entire town. The lives of the three sisters that give this play its title -- matriarchal Olga; witty Masha and baby Irina -- all revolve around their brother Andrei and his sometimes questionable decisions, and each character's true nature is revealed by how they cope with their changing fortune.
