Beaux Arts Club: Carol Triffle's Post-Feminist Comedy
In the late 19th century, bored American housewives formed ladies' clubs to pursue intellectual endeavors and educate themselves on fine art and literature. Carol Triffle's latest comedy, Beaux Arts Club, turns that historic institution on its head. Triffle gleefully riffs on female competition and the subversive nature of support groups. The play centers on three hilariously misguided female artists whose frustrations with their art and their own pointless lives lead them to engage in crazier and crazier hijinks. Let's just say a karaoke machine is involved as well as a series of young men who are objectified by the women for a change. Part absurdist farce, part irreverent social critique, Beaux Arts Club is both a role-reversal of the battle of the sexes and a gender-blind critique of the poseur in today's society.
