Down River: Female Friendship at the Heart of Acclaimed Canadian Indie
COMP - $4.50*
Not every tearjerker tugs at the heart, too, but Down River, the acclaimed Canadian independent film by Ben Ratner, does both. Yes, The Toronto Star suggested you'll need to "get out the hankies," but it also praised the film as an "intelligent work with moments of poignancy and emotional resonance by a talented filmmaker." Ratner has constructed a stirring story of three young women: Fawn, a talented but insecure actress; Harper, a gifted rock singer teetering between self-destruction and self-discovery; and Aki, an artist who emerges from under her paint-stained hoodie like a drunken butterfly. Guiding them all is Pearl, a proxy den mother, who dispenses wisdom and soup. Winner of the "Most Popular Canadian Film Prize" at the Vancouver International Film Festival, Down River now screens at Northwest Film Center. Ratner will introduce the film in person.
