Landmark Indie Film Northern Lights Captures Farm Politics
COMP - $5.00*
A landmark of American independent film, Northern Lights (1978) centers on one man's journey across a bleak North Dakota landscape in his Model T, as he attempts to drum up support for the populist Nonpartisan League. Winner of the Caméra d'Or (best-directed first feature) at the Cannes Film Festival, Northern Lights was shot on a shoestring budget in temperatures that hit 40 below, and used mostly non-professional locals for the cast. The film was directed by John Hanson and Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Rob Nilsson (Heat and Sunlight).
