Portland Opera: Verdi's Rigoletto
Powerhouse American baritone Stephen Powell, who the Wall Street Journal praised for his "rich, lyric baritone, commanding presence, and thoughtful musicianship," is back to perform the title role in the Portland Opera's latest production of Verdi's Rigoletto at Keller Auditorium. The revenge-filled jester at the center of Victor Hugo's famed drama encourages the lecherous duke he serves to seduce a young woman, resulting in a curse and disaster for Rigoletto's own beautiful daughter. Verdi's moving masterpiece boasts the famous tune "La donna è mobile," an instant hit that was sung throughout the streets and canals of Venice almost immediately after the opera's 1851 premiere, and has since been heard everywhere from The Planet of the Apes and Grand Theft Auto to The Simpsons.
