Soweto Gospel Choir Celebrates Faith & Nelson Mandela
Blending traditional, tribal and modern African gospel music with Western spiritual sounds, the internationally-renowned Soweto Gospel Choir creates a powerful cross-cultural musical experience unlike anything you've heard before. As representatives of South Africa's vibrant and diverse culture, the Soweto Gospel Choir sings in English as well as several of the country's other recognized languages, even incorporating some clicking and bird songs into the mix. Formed in 2002, the choir has won two Grammy Awards, worked with the likes of Robert Plant and had multiple No. 1 albums on the Billboard World Music charts. NPR's Stephen Thompson likened the experience of listening to the Soweto Gospel Choir to being "blasted with some sort of ray gun that shoots beams of joy and hope." Catch a ray for yourself when the Soweto Gospel Choir comes to Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall for Songs of the Free, a very special program celebrating Nelson Mandela.
