The Sacramento Ballet presents Ron Cunningham's A Midsummer Night's Dream
paired with George Balanchine's Western Symphony
. A Midsummer Night's Dream
is based on Shakespeare's comedy of mismatched lovers under the spell of a mischievous sprite. When the work was last performed in Sacramento, The Sacramento Bee
wrote that Cunningham "mastered a massive and tricky piece ..." that "thrilled the audience." Twenty young dancers will join the 30 professional company members in this family-friendly program. Western Symphony
showcases cowboys and dance hall girls strutting their stuff to a string of classic American folk songs, including "Red River Valley," "Old Taylor," "Rye Whiskey," "Good Night Ladies," "Oh Dem Golden Slippers" and "The Girl I Left Behind Me." One of Balanchine's most joyous ballets, the production honors classical ballet tradition, while also reflecting the great choreographer's lifelong affection for the traditions and myths of the America West. The Sacramento Bee
wrote, "Balanchine throws a pretty elegant hoedown ... breathtaking."
