Perfect seats, and very, very beautiful show (especially the third act with live orchestra)! I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I didn't like the second act (Ramona), a mix of play and ballet in which they try to tell the story of Ramona, a half Scottish half native American woman living in Southern California in the 1800s - not much ballet involved at all and kind of boring. Otherwise, wonderful!

Ramona seemed like a high school production...there was even a narrator...for BALLET! The worst (or the best, i.e. most hilarious part) was that one of the male dancers' pants ripped at the seam in the back, and you could see his bare ass through...continued

Excellent. Both the ballet and the orchestra. I'll be looking forward to more productions by this young troupe.
Myths and magic will fill the stage at Spreckels Theatre when City Ballet presents its season-closing show, transforming into dance the myths of the Greek god Apollo and the beloved local legend of Ramona, and the magic of Vivaldi’s masterpiece The Four Seasons.
Under the direction of Steven and Elizabeth Wistrich, the 16th season closes with a spectacular program that includes the world premiere of a brand-new ballet, The Ramona Myth, based on the beloved local legend of the young girl for whom the town of Ramona is named.
In addition to The Ramona Myth, the program, titled Myths & Magic, will include George Balanchine’s mythical masterpiece Apollo (1928), music by Igor Stravinsky, and Elizabeth Wistrich’s fully staged production of The Seasons, set to Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, both last performed by City Ballet in 2006.
The Ramona Myth – World Premiere

With music by composer Joaquin Rodrigo, Elizabeth Wistrich has created The Ramona Myth, a completely new ballet based entirely on the legend of the young girl for whom the local town of Ramona is named. The story comes from a novel written by Helen Hunt Jackson in 1884, about a part-Hispanic and part-Native American orphan girl growing up and getting married in Southern California, suffering racial discrimination and hardship.
Originally serialized in a weekly magazine, the novel became immensely popular, and has been made into four films. The story has been performed annually since 1923 as an outdoor play in the town of Hemet.

The inspiration for this work is Apollo, the Greek god of the sun, whose powers of song and music also associate him with the Muses, goddesses who represented the different arts. The three Muses represented were selected for their appropriateness to the choreographic arts. In the words of the composer, “Calliope personifies poetry and its rhythm; Polyhymnia represents mime; Terpsichore, combining in herself both the rhythm and the eloquence of gesture, reveals dancing to the world and thus among the Muses takes the place of honor beside Apollo.”

The Seasons was created by Elizabeth Wistrich in 1994 to Vivaldi’s greatest musical work, The Four Seasons, which inspired her to express the four different seasons through dance. The work commences with the lightness of ‘Spring,’ moving on to radiant ‘Summer,’ then to crisp ‘Autumn’ and closes with the flurry of ‘Winter.’
