The Divine Feminine Celebrated Through Dance
Fort Mason Center - Cowell Theater, Middle Pier, behind Herbst Pavilion Marina Blvd. at Buchanan St. San Francisco, CA 94123
The divine feminine has the strongest presence as Devi in Hinduism, among other major world religions, from the ancient times to the present. In Hinduism she is worshipped in her many forms, including that of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, as Lakshmi, the goddess of spiritual and material prosperity, and as Parvati, who symbolizes strength and power. Ironically, for women around the world, still much is to be desired to ensure equal status on important issues like education, economic empowerment and freedom of choice. The Caged Bird Who Sings is a new Indian Classical Dance (Bharatanatyam) production inspired by women who were groundbreaking in how they challenged the norms and embodied all the living Devis that walk this earth. This Samudra Dance Creations and Srishti Dance production at San Francisco's Fort Mason Center delves inside these stories of hope and courage by weaving dance, original music score and rich poetry.
