Another fine scenic design by Daniel Ostling surrounding a strained production of an essentially boring, hyper emotional story. The banal dialogue made a cast of mostly fine actors seem like semi-amatures working very hard at their larger than...continued

The show reflected Chinese culture and history. The set was creative and allowed for rapid scene changes with no big moves or prop setting. The actors were all marvelous and the story was thought provoking and timeless. I especially loved seeing...continued

The play relies on cultural assumptions about sacrifice and absolute loyalty that are so different from modern western society's that they are hard to understand or accept. But unlike my seatmate, I could suspend my disbelief, and found Orphan...continued

This is a classic Chinese play. Yes, on the surface the dialog might seem awkward and stage-performance like. The story might seem overtly emotional. But if you actually consider the cultural context of China, the ancient teachings of loyalty...continued

This production was totally wonderful - including the theme of sacrifice, loyalty, honor, duty, love, remembrance of ancestors, the stageing of this Chinese folk tale was imaginative, creative, allowed for quick changes of scene and agile...continued

I really enjoyed this production. It's been a while since I've been to an ACT event and now I regret my absence. The Orphan was a truly unique experience .. the stark staging was very effective making for smooth transition scene-to-scene, the...continued

I'll start by saying that this show may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I really liked it. ACT has put together a wonderfully creative and athletic production of classic Chinese theater .

A very good story, not familiar or ordinary to this westerner. An interesting production - strong performances all around, but some unusual overly-expository writing and direction, as well as some music and songs that are not melodic in a...continued

A lot of the performance was presented as a narrator telling a story to the audience. I would have preferred more acting, less story telling. I particularly enjoyed the actor playing the role of the orphan (Daisuke Tsuji, I believe).

Wasn't crazy about this translation, last scene between son and doctor tied up that loose end but didn't slip in gracefully to the rhythm of the play. Enjoyed the complex story, enjoyed the performance, just thought it could be better. You know...continued

What a TREAT! This was an EXCELLENT play. The story was mesermizing and I LOVED that the characters would explain who they were and what they were doing or cared about - provided perspective and I think that's what kept the story alive.
The music...continued

Many of my friends have seen this and they have either loved it of hated it. We LOVED it. Everything about it was superb from the staging, scenery, music, acting, story, and choreography. I do recommend that you read a synopsis of the story...continued

The play was great. The Goldstar seats sucked. I am a Red Velvet customer and usually get decent seats. There were several Goldstar customers around me and we were all disappointed with our seats. It was hard to enjoy the play from the outside...continued

I am not sure why this production got so much bad press. It was very well done. Obviously it was an epic story and 2 1/2 hours can't really cover all the details. But, just like "The White Snake" at the Berkeley Rep. last year; it was the...continued
