While the event was billed as a Flamenco "Juerga" or "Jam" this was true for only the second half of the program.
The first half consisted of dance performances by students of San Jose Flamenco Society. The students performed four numbers, two of which were basically "Flamenco Line Dance" for the intermediate students. The advanced students performed two nicely coreographed ensemble numbers. These were quite entertaining. Following the students, a local guitarist performed three "Flamenco inspired" pieces, which showed potential, but lacked polish.
The second part of the show featured two professional dancers from the Flamenco Society staff (one man, one woman). Of the two, the man compared most favorably with dancers that we saw in Sevilla. The woman (Koko) is apparently well known in the San Jose area...but I was more impressed with her teaching and coreography than her dancing.
Probably the bright(est) spot of the evening were the cantadore, cantadora and the guitarist that played for the dancers. This "supporing cast" was first rate and all were on par with the musicality of the Flamenco artists we saw in Sevilla.
In summary...we're glad we didn't pay full price ($14 ea), but it was a fun evening for the cost of discount movie tickets ($7 ea)!
