Gilbert & Sullivan's Musical Comedy Patience
There's an English village which has seen its share of fads over the years: from hippie to hipster clothes, from dancing the macarena to the dab, from playing with pet rocks to playing with fidget spinners. Now there's a new fad that's all the rage: aestheticism. A modern revival of a 19th-century fad, aestheticism prioritizes "art for art's sake," and its followers wear aesthetic outfits from that era, spouting poetry and carrying around poppies and lilies. A regiment of Dragoon Guards has returned to find that their fiancées no longer care for anyone who isn't aesthetic. In fact, they have all fallen in love with Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet. Meanwhile, Bunthorne wants to marry Patience, the one woman in the village who does not care about aestheticism and doesn't know what love is. Then a rival aesthetic poet, Grosvenor, comes to the village and declares his love for Patience. Who will win her love? Who will end up as Bunthorne's bride? Patience was the sixth operatic collaboration of 14 between Gilbert and Sullivan. It is one of the gems of the G&S canon, with witty lyrics, wonderful music and a satirical take on fads and the people who follow them for shallow reasons. Lyric Theatre launches into this timely musical comedy at San Jose City College Theater.
