I always enjoy Greg Proops, whose manic hyperverbalness and extended arias (with long parenthetical digressions from which you don't think he'll ever emerge but he does and remembers where he was) appeal to me and whose politics generally line up with mine. Didn't know I'd get Todd Glass, who seemed to me not to be entirely in synch with the room, but who I was glad to see in person anyway. Host Cody Woods didn't do as tight a set as you'd hope for someone who's only got like 15 minutes, but had a lot of energy. I think the SJ Improv gets a bunch of people who are just going out on a weekend night and may not necessarily know anything about the comics or their particular schtick (whereas the SF Punch Line, a smaller venue, tends to get fans/friends of the performers); the energy exchange with the crowd is more diffuse. I like the balcony seating arrangements at the Improv - forward-facing theatre seats in groups of three with a small cocktail table separating a group of two from a single. Bad if you're a party of four (but they'll put you on the floor, probably); parties of three can sit close enough to talk if they want to, or a couple and a single get separation. I could see floor seating with tables which hold three of which only one chair is facing the stage, which is kind of annoying. Balcony was only about 1/2 full, which may have contributed to many visits from waitstaff. Didn't have any food but prices weren't as abusive as some places. Two-drink minimum.
