Lonely Planet Founder Tony Wheeler Discusses His Book, Dark Lands
In the early '70s, a young Englishman named Tony Wheeler crossed the globe by land to arrive in Australia. He wrote about his adventures on the "hippie trail" in the guidebook Across Asia on the Cheap. That hand-printed, 96-page book evolved into an international media empire known as Lonely Planet Publications. Dark Lands, his newest book, explores the dangerous side of life as a global traveler, from stories of being mugged and arrested overseas to tales of traveling through lands wracked by civil unrest, drug wars and more.
