Stephen Sondheim's Assassins
is a darkly comic and compelling look at the lives, loves and legacies of nine presidential assassins and attempted assassins, including John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald. As the musical fleshes out the characters of the killers (or would-be killers), the revue-style portrayal compels the audience to consider their own motivations and the part American culture plays in creating these monsters. The music varies to reflect the popular music during the era of each character portrayed. Assassins
, which features music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by John Weidman, made its off-Broadway premiere in 1990, and its first Broadway production won five Tony Awards in 2004.
