Femme Lesbian Take on Clare Booth Luce's Play in Femmes: A Tragedy
Gina Young is an accomplished writer and performer whose original productions have toured throughout the United States and Europe. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2010, she has worked for American Idol and VH1's Pop Up Video. But it's in her own independent creations that her feminist viewpoint truly pops up. Her recent play, Tales of a Fourth Grade Lesbo, drew sold-out crowds in Los Angeles and received national media attention. Femmes: A Tragedy adds a contemporary femme lesbian twist to Clare Booth Luce's 1936 play, The Women, and a few deconstructed burlesque interludes. When a community organizer's polyamorous girlfriend dumps her for a hot bartender, her friends -- an activist, an academic and a party promoter -- are thrown into girl/girl competition despite their best feminist intentions. This piece is a thoughtful meditation on whether butch/femme relationships replicate heterosexual stereotypes.
