Inside Outside, Curated by Suchi Branfman
During the autumn of 2017, a group of choreographers and visual artists taught their creative process to incarcerated men inside the California Rehabilitation Center, a medium-security state men's prison in Norco, California. Inside Outside is a sharing of the dances performed, and work created, over the eight weeks, and a dialogue about the experiences of moving and making with folks inside prison. Among the pieces coming to the stage at Santa Monica's Highways Performance Space is Branfman's own Sustain, created in deep collaboration with a dozen incarcerated men, and imbued with the voices and movement of those who created it, despite the fact that the creative collaborators on the inside are unable to physically be present for this performance outside the prison walls.
