Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko is at the peak of his career and has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York's famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his new assistant, Ken, in his huge studio on the Bowery. He painstakingly trains and admonishes the young art student in his philosophy of painting and art. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko finally visits the completed restaurant, and he faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his ultimate betrayal and undoing. RED erupts with power, passion and intellect, embracing a fierce love for the meaning and purpose of art. It demands that we think and feel, aspiring to something beyond ourselves and beyond now -- that tiny bit of hope, that "red" that makes us human.
