It seemed longer than it was.
There is a simple reason for that. The content of Aristophane's very old comedies runs out well before the play does. I have seen Clouds, Birds, Frogs etc and it is always the same....a modern playwright uses the historic figure to hang a new work out in his name. Add music, props, perhaps as in this one new setting and a lot of physical over gesture to make the lines seem to live. But the problem is ...Aristophanes is dead. His better humor has been absorbed long ago by comedy very old old then Renaissance then French and all the way to sitcom. And the rest is digs at long dead politicians and ideas. So for a few minutes the invention worked yesterday. And then the staleness and forced relevance was apparent. This is good for you academic mindset underlies one reason to see Lysistrata. And in a way it is. But any play that makes you sleepy at 3PM is only OK at best.
Run Time: 85 minutes (no intermission) Recommended for audiences age 13 and older.
