Katya Kabanova: Seattle Opera Stages Tragic Romance
Seattle Opera updates Leos Janácek's 1921 romantic tragedy to the 1950s, all the better to tell the story of a passionate young woman trapped in an oppressive marriage. Sopranos Melody Moore and Corinne Winters alternate in the title role as Katya Kabanova, who finds liberation in the arms of another man, though her tormenting guilt leads to a tragic ending. Czech composer Leos Janácek's haunting score was inspired by Slavic folk songs.
