Just to clarify, the 4-star rating was not due to the performances. All four actors deftly embraced the work and did a great job with material that felt cumbersome at times. Somehow, when characters in a Sam Shepard play speechify in a way that is incongruous to their social background or experience, we seem to accept it as art. It's almost as if we are getting a glimpse of a person of greater intellect, wisdom and understanding residing within that character. Not so with this piece. There was, for us, a definite disconnect in that regard which had nothing to do with the actors, it was the structure of the play, and the writing itself. We also felt that the intertwining of the stories was somewhat forced, and that the stories themselves were not the best vehicle for a statement that was never fully realized, if at all. Some very nice performances, and a decent effort by the writer who maybe should get a little distance between herself and her work, and do some rewrites.
Elizabeth Sarnoff is the co-creator of the FOX series Alcatraz. She has written episodes of NYPD Blue, Crossing Jordan and Lost, and was both a writer and producer for Deadwood.
