Washington, D.C.-based a cappella jazz ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock is renowned for their unique blend of spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip-hop and jazz improvisation, intermingled with R&B and soul. Sweet Honey's collective voice, occasionally accompanied by hand percussion instruments, produces a sound filled with soulful harmonies and intricate rhythms. Founded in 1973, the Grammy-winning group has spent recent years collaborating with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and the National Symphony Orchestra, performing at the White House and singing around the world. Sweet Honey in the Rock is comprised of six remarkable women, including founding members Carol Maillard and Louise Robinson, as well as sign language interpreter Shirley Childress Saxton.
