Conga master and all around percussionist Wilson "Chembo" Corniel got his start in 1970s Brooklyn, where he was mentored by legendary percussionists such as Tommy Lopez, Little Ray Romero and Cachete Maldonado, as well as Chucho Valdez later in his career. Honing his craft alongside the creme-de la-creme in jazz and Latin jazz, Chembo has played and or collaborated with luminaries such as Tito Puente, Machito, Louie Ramirez, Chucho Valdes, Grady Tate, Chico Freeman and Larry Harlow's Latin Legends band. Today, he is considered as one of the best hard-hitting, versatile percussionists around. Catch his set when the Wilson "Chembo" Corniel Latin Jazz Quintet comes to Tarrytown's Jazz Forum.
