Crumbs From the Table of Joy: Bittersweet Comedy Examines Race
From Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage (Ruined, Intimate Apparel) comes the touching dramatic comedy Crumbs From the Table of Joy. Tackling topics like race, loss, coming of age and cultural revolution, Crumbs tells the story of Ernestine Crump who, in 1950, has just lost her mother. As her father finds his only solace in religion, Ernestine struggles to find her place in the world as a young African-American woman during a time when America was in the throes of explosive race relations. And her struggle grows only more complex when her communist aunt moves into the house (touting strong feminist ideas) and her father comes home with a new wife -- a white woman. Now Serendipity Players, in partnership with Clark College, presents a fresh production of this moving and amusing play directed by Tony Broom.
