Shadowlands Illuminates Love Between Narnia Author and Poet
The play Shadowlands celebrates the real-life romance that bloomed between the British intellectual C.S. Lewis and the American poet Joy Davidman. Lewis, an accomplished author and thinker, has every reason to be confident in his world view: After all, millions of adults read his books on Christianity and millions more children devour his book series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Nevertheless, as soon as Davidman and her young son come into Lewis's life, this Oxford professor's notions about love and God are changed forever. William Nicholson's tender play was nominated for a Tony before being adapted into a hit film starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. Now director Rachel Keen conjures up the "dreaming spires" of Oxford and the world of Shadowlands for the Magenta Theater Company.
