Lenny White and Eddie Gomez inhabit the rarified air reserved for jazz legends, and it was a privilege to see them at the Howard last night. And as much as I loved experiencing the percussive magic of the great Mr. White, Eddie came close to stealing the show with his gorgeous upright bass solos. But the brightest star was the 16 year old Russian kid. Most of the night he played his Steinway with both the subtlety of Bill Evans (as on his interpretation of Miles Davis' "Solar") and the unpredictable intensity of Thelonious Monk (Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" was the evening's acoustic highlight). Amazing. But my favorite part of the night was when this high school aged maestro put on his Keith Jarrett hat and jammed on the electric piano. Beka and his two elder sidemen tore up an original tune that sounded right out of the early 70's hey day of jazz rock. Yes it was a short concert, but man was it sweet.
