Critical Breaks Reading Series: Chasing Mehserle
In Chinaka Hodge's play "Chasing Mehserle," the legacy of Rodney King's abuse at the hands of police merges with that of Oscar Grant's 2009 fatal shooting by San Francisco BART Police officer Johannes Mehserle to create a searing portrait of injustice prolonged. Mehserle claimed he thought he was using his stun gun to subdue the unarmed 22-year-old as he lay face-down on the platform floor, and was later found guilty of a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. This captivating staged reading performance piece at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts examines race, class, gender, and privilege through the lens of a fictional character as he processes the real-life murder of Grant.
