The history of modern Israel has been recorded many times and in many ways, but rarely has this story been told with the immediacy and intimacy of Israel: A Home Movie
. Directed by Eliav Lilti (Urban Tale
), this mesmerizing and moving documentary is assembled from private home movies shot from the '30s through the '70s. A collage of 8mm, 16mm and Super 8 footage chronicles not only the family life of ordinary citizens, but also major historical events in the life of the region. These personal histories -- often narrated by the very people who handled the camera -- are neither "left-wing" nor "right-wing" accounts, but human portraits of a young nation both hopeful and troubled. A discussion after the film will be led by Professor Dan Arbell, AU Center for Israel Studies Scholar in Residence.
