Sir Mark Elder Conducts Strauss' Ein Heldenleben
Sir Mark Elder conducts the National Symphony Orchestra through a musical biography of Richard Strauss, juxtaposing the composer's greatest masterpiece with one of his earlier, more intimate works. The autobiographical Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life), written at the turn of the 20th century, is considered a thinly-veiled swipe at music critics, though it also contains a tender melodic tribute to his beloved wife, Pauline. This program at The Kennedy Center Concert Hall opens with Strauss' Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments and also features an interlude of Haydn's Symphony No. 80.
