NSO & Leila Josefowicz Play Stravinsky & Mozart
We think of cover songs as something bluegrass bands ironically do with '80s songs, but even Mozart wasn't above putting his spin on other composers' works -- like he did with a harpsichord fugue by J.S. Bach's son Wilhelm. That piece opens this concert from the National Symphony Orchestra, followed by soloist Leila Josefowicz taking center stage for Stravinsky's Violin Concerto. Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments is also on the program, which culminates with another appearance from Mozart, his Symphony No. 39. The first from Mozart's famous final trilogy, when the 39th was performed at a memorial concert in 1792, one eyewitness described the piece as so majestic that it left listeners "nearly paralyzed." Don't miss this concert conducted by Gianandrea Noseda at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
