Ovid's Vineyard: Music of the French Baroque
In 18th-century France, the rich imagery of the myths detailed in Ovid's Metamorphoses were an inspiration to composers. Music itself was undergoing a metamorphosis at the time, from the elaborate music of the baroque to a more natural and graceful sound, which eventually developed into the classical style. At Folger Theater, the Folger Consort presents Cantatas by Monteclair and Rameau based on Ovid's tales, along with delightful instrumental works by Marais, Couperin, Telemann, and others. Instruments include violin, viol, lute, flute, harpsichord, and soprano Rosa Lamoreaux will provide vocals.
