The Crazy Story Behind Rossini's Stabat Mater
Haters gonna hate. And that's especially true when you're the top dog, like Gioachino Rossini was in the opera. Sure, he presented a collaboration (Stabat Mater) as solely his own, but we all make mistakes, right? After all, the guy did write just shy of 40 operas in 20 years, including timeless works like The Barber of Seville and William Tell. And when he went back to finish the controversial piece himself, the result was a massive hit, proving critics -- looking at you, Wagner -- wrong. In this program at the National Museum of the American Indian, Scott Tucker, artistic director of the Choral Arts Society of Washington, will take you behind the scenes of Stabat Mater, from the music itself to its history and context. Plus, members of the chorus will be there to lend their voices in excerpts from the piece.
