Steppenwolf Theatre Discusses The Grapes of Wrath, Screens Vintage Clips
The powerful themes and vibrant characters in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath have inspired many dramatic interpretations, including Steppenwolf Theatre Company's iconic 1988 production written and directed by Frank Galati, and featuring a young Gary Sinise. Seventy-five years after the book's publication, Galati and Steppenwolf actress Lois Smith, who played Ma Joad in that original production, take the stage for a lively conversation about condensing a seminal Depression-era novel for the stage. As actors from Florida's Asolo Repertory Theatre enact scenes live from their current production of Galati's adaptation, in addition to screening of scenes from the original 1988 production, one thing will become clear: different adaptations may come and go, but the source material itself is as timeless and relevant as ever.
