COMP - $5*
The Drama Department at Catholic University of America presents The Crucible. Arthur Miller's award-winning examination of the Salem witch trials was written as an allegory for the McCarthyism "witch hunts" for communists in the 1950s. In the play, set in Salem in 1692, mass hysteria takes hold when five young girls claim to have been visited in the night by the devil. John Proctor and his loyal wife Elizabeth are caught in the crossfire. Miller's play won the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play and was adapted into a 1997 movie starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder.
