Tribes: Comic Drama Explores Deaf Culture
$22.50 - $40.50*
$42 - $78
Nina Raine's Tribes follows Billy, a deaf man raised inside the politically incorrect cocoon of his parents' house. He's adapted brilliantly to his hearing family's unobliging ways, learning how to read lips and live in a hearing world -- but it's not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman fluent in sign language and on the brink of deafness herself, that he finally understands what it feels like to be understood. The Deaf community becomes his new "tribe," leading to tensions with his family. Tribes premiered at London's Royal Court in 2010 with a sold-out run, which garnered rave reviews and numerous honors, and then made another critically acclaimed appearance off-Broadway, where it won the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play. Now David Muse directs a new production of Tribes as a part of Studio Theatre's season-long New British Invasion Festival.
