About Chicago on Broadway
Pop, six, squish… Chicago! The longest currently running show on Broadway, Chicago is an American classic. Running at the Ambassador Theatre for decades, this Broadway musical features crime, intrigue, and sex, plus, a booming score to boot. John Kander and Fred Ebb’s tremendous songs give each character a rousing anthem, and in Walter Bobbie’s production, which pays homage to theatre legend Bob Fosse’s original choreography, stars often inhabit lead roles to keep the production fresh and timely.
Set to the backdrop of the Jazz Age’s new sound, Chicago follows two rival vaudevillian murderesses locked up in Cook County Jail. Nightclub star Velma is in jail for killing her husband and sister after finding them in bed, and housewife/chorus girl Roxie killed her lover.
Velma enlists prison matron Mama Morton and quick-moving lawyer Billy Flynn to turn the star’s prison sentence into a media blitz, because who in showbiz doesn’t love a comeback story? All the while, Roxie has plans of her own to steal the spotlight — and the jury's affections.
Chicago highlights
Save on the famed Broadway musical Chicago with Goldstar, and learn more about the legendary, long-running production. On Broadway since 1996, this revival is the first since the 1975 premiere, which ran for two years. It's now become the longest-running Broadway revival ever and the second-longest-running Broadway show of all time.
- This Chicago is both scaled-back and full-throttle. The design for this Broadway revival is minimal, favoring skimpy black outfits and barebone sets to make plenty of room for zingy, all-out dance numbers and steamy songs.
- The production won awards galore. This production won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical along with five other Tonys. Chicago also won the Drama Desk Award for Best Revival of a Musical and Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
- Fred Ebb and John Kander are Broadway royalty. Kander and Ebb, one of Broadway’s most famous songwriting duos, have created multiple Tony Award-winning successes, including Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Rink, Curtains, and more.
