About Spamalot on Broadway

Get ready to find your grail as the musical comedy Spamalot returns to Broadway for the first time. The hilarious stage adaptation of Monty Python and the Holy Grail comes to the St. James Theatre with a star-studded cast, including Michael Urie, James Monroe Igleheart, Christopher Fitzgerald, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, and more. The laugh-out-loud spoof of Arthurian legends follows familiar figures like Lancelot, the Lady of the Lake, and King Arthur on a ridiculous expedition to find the Holy Grail.

The original production won numerous awards, including the Tony for Best Musical, the Drama Desk for Outstanding Musical and Best Lyrics, and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. With a book and lyrics by Monty Python co-creator Eric Idle, fans of the cult classic movie will love the musical’s incredibly silly humor that keeps the film's spirit — with plenty of songs that go like this.

Spamalot highlights

Spamalot premiered on Broadway in 2005 with Tim Curry, Hank Azaria, Sara Ramirez, Christian Borle, and plenty of other stars in the original cast. The musical went on to play over 1,500 performances before closing in 2009. Other famous productions include a three-year run in London, numerous North American tours, and a Hollywood Bowl performance that featured stars like Christian Slater, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Craig Robinson, Merle Dandridge, and Warwick Davis. This Spamalot revival heads to Broadway after a sold-out run at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

  • Hear new jokes. The Kennedy Center performance featured new timely jokes and references to pop culture and D.C. You can expect the same from this Broadway revival, too.
  • Enjoy plenty of gags. Anyone who is a fan knows there’s no shortage of gags, innuendos, and general absurdity in a Monty Python film, and the same goes for Spamalot. Well-known bits from the movie like the coconuts as horse hooves, the not-dead-yet man, and the Knights Who Say "Ni!" all remain for the stage.
  • Watch for musical theatre references. Spamalot famously parodies other shows, including The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Dreamgirls, and more, in addition to poking fun at general musical theatre tropes. The show is even self-referential during the iconic song “You Won't Succeed (On Broadway).”
