About The White Chip

Sean Daniels's autobiographical comedy about love, loss, and the perils of addiction is making a triumphant return to New York City. Originally showcased at 59E59 Theaters in 2019, The White Chip is back in New York for an encore, once again under the direction of Tony Award nominee Sheryl Kaller.

The play follows the life of Steven, a highly accomplished theatre director whose world seems perfect — he's married, surrounded by supportive friends, and on the brink of landing his dream job at a top American theatre. However, there's just one hitch: Steven grapples with alcoholism, which is spiraling out of control.

Join Steven on a daunting journey from his first drink through pivotal moments in his life, leading him to crucial decisions and, ultimately, the darkest depths of despair. Yet, from this rock bottom emerges the strength to navigate a path toward sobriety. The White Chip is a play that is darkly humorous, startlingly impactful, and profoundly theatrical.

The White Chip highlights

Playwright Sean Daniels drew on personal struggles with alcoholism to craft Steven, whose successful career contrasts sharply with a hidden battle. Steven's habit of covertly drinking vodka in soda bottles goes unnoticed by his employers. However events including his father's Parkinson's diagnosis exacerbate his downward spiral. The play intricately explores the improbable journey of a man seemingly past saving, yet who discovers a path to recovery against all odds.

  • The White Chip received acclaim in 2019. The show was a New York Times Critic’s Pick, with the review reading, “Kaller and her excellent cast achieve a delicate equilibrium between laugh-out-loud comedy and gasp-inducing, self-inflicted tragedy.”
  • Daniels is a sobriety advocate. The playwright currently spearheads the Recovery Project at Florida Studio Theatre, dedicated to eradicating the stigma surrounding addiction and recovery. This play is in line with its mission.
  • An offstage couple brings The White Chip to the stage. Joe Tapper, who reprises his role as Steven from the 2019 run, was previously seen on Broadway in You Can't Take It With You. That’s where he met his wife, Annaleigh Ashford, a producer on The White Chip!
