How was your experience?
Terrific show and contrasts. Dat Phan's self deprecating but ultimately loving portrait of his family and the Viet Nam culture was very funny and universal. We have been following Jake Johannsen for about 25 years. He actually performed at a charity benefit of a non-profit agency I ran in 1985. We paid him $100 and he was terrific and he looked much younger. How does that happen? He has continuously grown as an artist. In addition to be very funny, he is sophisticated, a good actor, writer and director. He pushes himself intellectually and uses challenging and unconventional materials, i.e., the global economic meltdown (let's go with putting on Stimulus Day), the aging process (I am now invisible to 23 year old hot girls) as well as good old sexual vignettes and stories. I wonder sometimes how difficult it is for a comedian with such unusual richness reach audiences not prepared for thinking on more sophisticated levels than normally experienced.
