How was your experience?
I loved the cartoon so I'm trying to figure out why I didnt fall in love with this musical. Several issues we had: 1. You couldn't understand the Genie most of the time. The music over powered him AND that character fires off so many one-liners and jokes but I believe the combination of the speed he was singing and being over-powered by the music, we couldn't make out 75% of them. 2. There are 3 characters (Aladdin's friends) who kinda narrate the story between scenes and also have parts within the story. Sure they had some funny moments but we felt they distracted from the story. Plus they had some really long, unnecessary scenes. 3. We were not impressed by the new songs that were made for the musical 4. The stage effects are a lot of fun. That is probably the best thing about it. Its always interesting to see how they can bring a cartoon to life and give similar effects. I liked the projected "cartoon" images throughout. The Genie's introduction number was probably our favorite and the scene with them on the magic carpet was pretty cool too. 5. A few too many "modern cultural references". Sure, Robin Williams pulled it off. However, Robin Williams isn't in this musical. And throwing in numerous modern cultural references continually yanks you out of the moment. I know sometimes its fun breaking the 4th wall but... it kinda became annoying. 6. They obviously had to make a few changes like making Iago into a human sidekick (which I thought they did very well) and no Abu. 7. The acting was very good and the music was great.
