How was your experience?
Unlike most other people reviewing this play, I really didn't enjoy it. The idea of what was happening in the next room in Victorian times is an interesting concept to explore in a theatrical setting, but something just didn't work for me. The metaphors and themes felt really clunky and the humor was kind of low brow and not very clever. The double entendres were all ones that have been said time and again and they just fell flat for me. Not sure if it was the writing of the play or the timing of the cast, but something just didn't work. And it wasn't the subject matter that turned me off, I actually study gender and sexuality so I'm not uncomfortable in that realm. I guess I was just hoping for more. When the first act ended, there was no real conflict going on that I felt I needed to stick around for the second act to see resolved. And many of the character choices just felt forced and didn't really come out of any sort of organic place. Just seemed like empty shock value (oh! wow! they're using an electrical massager on stage!). And if you're not really shocked by that... then there's not really much in this play.
