Assigned at Box Office
How was your experience?
This play is billed as a musical event which it is and once I got past the idea that there was no story I was able to enjoy it more. Whatever narrative is there is told mainly through song choice and inspiration. The thin story of Janis is sanitized however this is an entertaining evening. The voices of the performers gave me chills. It was nice to see a "event" that payed homage to the stars influences as much as the star herself. There was also a point in the evening where I did feel as if Janis was being channeled. With the new trend in theater to mine old pop/rock song this play walks a fine line and could easily go the way of Mama Mia or Rock of Ages and to its benefit it stays above the fray. Arena stage continues to offer some of the most exciting "theater" in the DC area.
