How was your experience?
The description sounded like so much fun that I had to book this bike trip. Maybe it was the end of the season, or maybe I just showed up on a bad day, but this didn't turn out to be the event I hoped for. First, they didn't have my reservation. When I produced my Goldstar confirmation email, they said, "sorry, but we're booked. You can come back in 3 hrs if you like." Seriously? To be fair, they were very nice people - just really disorganized. I asked them what I could do to kill 3 hrs, so they gave bikes to my wife and me to use. We rode around town and ended up seeing most of the sites on the tour. That was good, because the tour had 10 people and 1 guide - not a good ratio if you're looking for personalized care. The bikes were beat, with torn seats, loose hardware and junk shifting mechanism. One poor guy even had a chain break during the tour. As I said, a 10 to 1 ratio wasn't good - 2 people got separated and lost near the end, but found the bike shop. Don't get me wrong, the tour had many great views and fast downhills that were a lot of fun. Our guide was patient, pleasant and knowledgeable, and I got a real feel for La Jolla. It's a good concept and I might do it again - but probably not with San Diego Bike and Kayak.
