How was your experience?
Very disappointing! Canned music played over a poor sound system & dancers with very little energy. Cheap-looking roll-down "scenery" (painted flats). Poor lighting. Back-of stage dancers in shadows. Looked like producers were trying to save money on lighting. Even the first row costumes looked drab due to dim lighting. Whites looked grey. Few dancers smiled. Seemed bored. Just going through the motions. They didn't dance badly - just without any energy. If this had been an evening performance after a Matinee, I might make allowances, but this was a 4 PM show on a thursday. The music sounded as if it was being played in another room. The lead ballerina was not even perfectly in-synch with the music cues at times! I've seen the Bolshoi in Moscow & other traveling troups & by comparison this performance was mediocre at best! As a musician I've evenplayed The Nutcracker & some of the "exotic" dances were quite a bit slower than the expected tempos. Also, every other company I've seen danced those "exotics" (Chinese, Spanish, Indian, etc.) as ensemble pieces - not as duets. (More corners being cut for expediency). Highlight: A cute, humerous interpolation of a young, "Hippie" bear doing a Michael Jackson "Moon-Walk" with a guitar during the Russian dance.
