How was your experience?
We saw the first performance of the Royale and were impressed with the depth of emotion, the staging and lighting, and with a number of winning performances. As with many new plays, there are things to adapt and change, especially regarding pacing and tightening some sections of the script. The technique of using rhythm to depict the boxing matches was very exciting, and it gave the audience the opportunity to focus less on the brutality of a boxing match and more on the experience of the fighters themselves and their thought processes throughout. The subject matter is handled with sensitivity and a great sense of historical self-awareness - it doesn't feel like reality as the characters wrestle with their choices - but it doesn't feel too much like commentary, either, perhaps because the lead actor is so very good at sticking with his character's experiences in the moment as opposed to others in the cast. Also, the pre-show activities were fun and a great way for audience members to prep for the play!
