How was your experience?
The actors are really working hard here, and that’s a problem, you shouldn’t see them struggling. It’s not their fault, they are hindered by the direction, set, sound, and lighting. The minimalist set with pantomime doorway is probably meant to make the setting more unreal and fairytale like but this is a play about being trapped and claustrophobic. The set with no walls takes away from that feeling and each time someone comes through the door the spell these fine actors are weaving is disrupted. The decision to use faltering radio and television noise only served to make it harder to hear the cast trying to get out their lines with an Irish brogue. It was really disappointing to see such a talented ensemble be led astray by a director who doesn’t seem to understand the dark lives being portrayed in the script.
