Friday May 17, 2013 / 8:00pmSan Francisco Opera Orchestra: Puccini, Rota, Brahms
How was your experience?
In spite of the sparse attendance at this performance, what the audience lacked in numbers, it certainly made up in enthusiasm. The SF Opera orchestra with Nicola Luisotti at the helm were in good form. The Puccini "Capriccio Sinfonico" proved to be a pleasant curtain raiser which was then followed by the centerpiece of the evening, Nino Rota's piano concerto in C major, dispatched with vigor, accuracy and beauty by a gifted young Italian pianist, Giuseppe Albanese who then treated the audience with no less than 3 magnificent encores. The second half of the program gave the audience a sensitive reading of Brahms' symphony No. 3. It lagged a little towards the end but the third movement was sublimely played.
