How was your experience?
An evening with John Waters is an amalgam of clever stand-up comedy and astute sociological observation. Waters talked non-stop for more than an hour about his movies and the actors/characters in them, his books, his life and experiences in Baltimore, his travels (including a recent cross-country hitchhiking trip), his perspective as a proud but not sanctimonious gay man, and pretty much anything that crossed his mind. Then he answered questions from the audience, demonstrating that he is as entertaining on his feet as in his prepared material. The only disappointment at the Howard -- and it's a big one -- is that this was advertised and ticketed as an 8 p.m. show. But for reasons no one could explain, it started at 7:30. Patrons arriving just in time for an 8 p.m. curtain discovered that they had missed a big part of the event. (That's why I've deducted one from what would have been five stars.) It looks like somebody at the Howard Theater needs a clock.
